Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi stands as one of Italy‘s finest native white grapes, known for its exceptional longevity. It thrives in the province of Ancona, home to the Castelli di Jesi DOC and DOCG. The name originates from the hilltop villages encircling the central town of Jesi, each boasting its own medieval fortress. These villages, such as Staffolo, Cupramontana, Montecarrotto, Castelbellino, and Castelplanio, offer stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. Resembling balconies, they overlook this Marche coastal region, which, when viewed from above, resembles a giant hair-comb. Numerous river valleys, cutting through limestone, traverse the land, flowing east to west until reaching the Adriatic. The unimpeded sea breezes from the coast, channeled through these valleys, contribute to the unique terroir.
Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi has earned the moniker “the white Barolo” invoking notions of complexity, delicacy, longevity, and exceptional quality. Indeed, the finest wines from this region are truly world-class, boasting captivating aromatics and youthful freshness while possessing the ability to develop magnificently over many years in the bottle.
At its best, Verdicchio is distinctive, unique, and absolutely glorious. As the wines age, they gain complexity, and many reach their zenith between five and ten years. Therefore, it is advisable to acquire a bottle for immediate enjoyment and another for future aging.
