The Azienda Agricola Tenuta Viglione has its origins in the old agricultural and viticultural traditions of Zullo’s family. They were moved by the desire to develop the huge winemaking potential of the area between the towns of Gioia del Colle (BA) and Santeramo in Colle (BA) in Puglia, and started producing fine wines here since decades. The company grows 370 acres of vineyards at the average altitude of 450 meters. The main varietal is Primitivo, but other indigenous grapes are grown, too as Verdeca, Falanghina, Fiano, Negroamaro and Nero di Troia. The organic method of agriculture and winemaking is certified since 2005.

Verdeca

Verdeca is one of the many Italian grape varieties named after the green colour of its berries, even when fully matured. The origin of this white grape is often contested, as claims vacillate between Greece and Croatia. Once widely planted, it was thought of as a simple blending grape for vermouth production. Recently, however, the true potential is being realized, Verdeca is now a key white grape variety in Puglia, used in several blends as well as a monovarietal. In the same way of Tenuta Viglione, many producers highlight Verdeca in varietal bottlings that show off its crisp, clean fruit tones, laser-like acidity and stony minerality.
