A unique wine, the first and only 100% Merlese in the world.
A new grape variety developed through research carried out by the University of Bologna Department of Agrarian Sciences, Merlese combines the finest characteristics of Sangiovese with those of Merlot. The 5-year-old vines are planted in medium-textured, limestone-clay soils and yield 8 tons per hectare. After a meticulous quality-selection of the berries, the must ferments in temperature-controlled vats of fibreglassed concrete and of cocciopesto, with programmed pumpovers for optimal extraction from the skins. Merlese matures exclusively in steel.
Intense red with purple highlights. Dark cherry and wild berry backgrounded by notes of spice on the nose, the gift of its Merlot parent.
Rich on the palate, shows great elegance, thanks to a tangy acidity and smooth mouthfeel. The tannins are pronounced but enjoyable.

Land: All the wines produced by Cesari are made within the 255 hectares of vineyards. Claterna, Casetta, Parolino, Laurento, Tauleto, Ca Grande, Miravalle and Liano are the estates in Emilia Romagna, Italy. All protected by a very particular soil; a crown-like formation of blue clay rocks known as Calanchi Azzurri. These rocks along with the climate helps the vine growing.
Soul: All the process includes the value of experience combined with the state of the art production techniques showing every day Cesari passion and respect for a rigorous method that is the base for great quality products.
Wine: any single bottle bottled by Cesari contains the best of the knowledge and know how, the flavour of the grapes that distinguish the area of production and the grape.
Heritage, Innovation and sustainability are the pillars of Umberto Cesari winery. The first to be certified as a ”National Integrated Production Quality System”(SQNPI) for the production of grapes and wines in the Emilia Romagna region. All the practices adopted aiming to preserve the land and the vines.

Merlese

The red grape variety is a new cross between Sangiovese x Merlot. The crossing took place at the University of Bologna in Italy. The variety protection was granted in 2007. The medium ripening vine is resistant to fungal diseases. It is grown in the Italian regions of Abruzzo, Emilia-Romagna, Lombardy, Marche, Tuscany and Veneto. In 2016, 8 hectares of Merlese vines were reported.
